St. Nicholas of Japan

This book by Bishop Alexander (Mileant) is devoted to the life and apostolic labors of St. Nicholas of Japan (Kasatkin), founder of the Orthodox Church in Japan. It recounts his calling, his first years of ministry in Hakodate, the conversion of the first Japanese believers, the establishment of the Orthodox mission, and his many years of work translating Holy Scripture and the liturgical books into Japanese. Special attention is given to the saint’s ministry during the Russo-Japanese War, when he had to reconcile loyalty to his homeland with pastoral care for his Japanese flock. The book also includes the saint’s sayings and counsels, and presents him as an outstanding Orthodox missionary who devoted his whole life to spreading the Gospel in Japan.
