Saint Theophan the Recluse (1815–1894) was a Russian Orthodox bishop who, after many years of pastoral and scholarly service, withdrew into seclusion for the sake of prayer and writing. His letters and books on the spiritual life remain among the most widely read guides in the Orthodox tradition.
